Along with several other Christian denominations, the Jehovah's Witness church believes in fully immersing new members during baptism. This 1971 photo shows minister M. Kingi baptising Mary Stevens of Porirua in a ceremony at the Lower Hutt town hall. Eighteen other Jehovah's Witnesses from the Wellington area were baptised by total immersion during this ceremony. Each had completed an intensive course of Bible study.
