A smiling David Bain (centre) appears outside the Christchurch High Court in June 2009, following his acquittal on charges of having murdered his family. Bain is flanked by his defence counsel, Michael Reed QC (left), and his chief supporter, Joe Karam (right). The campaign for a retrial for Bain, who had originally been convicted in May 1995, had a very high profile. To guarantee a fair trial the case was moved from Dunedin, where the killings occurred, to Christchurch. This illustrates the lengths that must sometimes be gone to in order to ensure a citizen's right to a fair trial.
