Karam and John Haddad Menswear opened on Ōtorohanga's main street in 1965 and was still going strong in the early 2000s. Karam and John's father Michael Haddad opened a fruit shop in Ōtorohanga in 1928 and built and ran a milk bar – one of the first in New Zealand – in the town from 1935. John worked in the milk bar (which was still open in 2011) after leaving school, and Karam opened the clothing store next door in 1965. He was joined by his brother in 1971. The Haddads – who are of Lebanese descent – have become well-known throughout New Zealand and have even featured in an ANZ bank advertisement. This is Karam and John Haddad in the door of their shop in 2011.
