Treasury staff with computers, 1968

In the 1960s the Treasury was keen to use computers to gain greater knowledge of and control over public expenditure. In this March 1968 picture, senior computer operator J. A. Drane (left) discusses results with investigating officers R. G. Laking (centre) and L. C. Neilson. While computers did simplify the task of tracking expenditure, controlling expenditure remained an elusive goal.
