This group of competitors took part in the first New Zealand Veteran Athletes Cross-Country Championships at Paekākāriki in August 1970. This race was the first national veterans' athletics competition. 49 runners from around New Zealand took part. The winner was Bruce Collier, with Garnet Nelson second and former Empire Games gold medallist Harold Nelson third. The race set a pattern for national events, involving competition followed by a convivial social function.
