Neroli Fairhall is shown here with fellow members of the New Zealand Olympic team at the opening ceremony of the Los Angeles Olympics, 1984. Fairhall made history as the first paraplegic athlete to compete at an Olympic Games. She became a paraplegic due to a motorbike accident at age 24. She won a gold medal for archery at the 1980 Arnhem Paralympics. Fairhall then went on to win a gold medal at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games, competing against able-bodied athletes. She also represented New Zealand at the 1972 Heidelberg, 1988 Seoul and 2000 Sydney Paralympics.
