Installing the tandem accelerator at Gracefield

Installing the tandem accelerator at Gracefield

Nuclear physicist Rodger Sparks (far left), with Dr Graeme Coote (centre) and engineer Jim Kindred, inspect the tandem accelerator mass spectrometer at Gracefield, Lower Hutt, around 1982. The particle accelerator allowed radiocarbon technology to be used for research in a wide range of sciences and industries. Dr Sparks led a team to Canberra, Australia, where they dismantled the accelerator and shipped it to New Zealand. They then reassembled it at Gracefield.
