Max Gimblett, 'In the spring of my 73rd year'

Artist Max Gimblett is shown reflected in his own painting, completed in 2008. Gimblett was born in New Zealand, but then made his primary base in New York after 1972, and his work is in the tradition of American abstract expressionism. Gimblett is one of many New Zealand painters who have spent long periods outside the country. However, he continued to exhibit often in New Zealand and pay return visits to the country, and in 2005 he became visiting professor at the University of Auckland, and so is recognised as a significant contributor to New Zealand art. He is well known for his quatrefoil paintings such as this work, although he has also produced many drawings on paper and limited-edition books.
