Layers of volcanic ash

Travellers along the Desert Road pass through road cuttings showing layers of andesitic tephra (ash and lapilli). These have been ejected within the last 15,000 years from Ruapehu, Ngāuruhoe (in the background) and Tongariro volcanoes.
