Te aitanga pepeke – the insect world

by  Bradford Haami

Ko te take e ngau kino ai te namu, he whai utu i a Tūmatauenga, nāna i patu a Namuiria, te namu tuatahi ki te ao. He nui ngā kōrero a te Māori ka whai wāhi ai ngā naonao, pēpepe, kihikihi, waeroa, aha atu.

What is te aitanga pepeke?

Ko ‘te aitanga pepeke’ ko ngā momo ngārara me ētahi atu mea he rite ētahi āhuatanga; arā, e whā, neke atu rānei ngā waewae; ka tūturi, ko ētahi ka māwhiti; ko ētahi o te aitanga pepeke ko te waeroa, te pūrerehua, te pēpepe, te pūngāwerewere, te namu.

Ko ngā ingoa o tēnā o tēnā o te aitanga pepeke ka whakaatu i ō rātou āhua:

  • Ko te kupu ‘peke’, mō te whanatū, te hōkai, te hūpeke rānei.
  • Ko te kupu ‘pepeke’, mō te kakama o te nekeneke haere. Mō ngā ngārara katoa te karangatanga nei.
  • Ko te tikanga o te ‘kupu ‘pēpeke’, kia whakapāhake te tinana, kia tūturi ngā pona.

A Whiro, a Tāne me ngā taua pepeke

Ka whakahau e Whiro āna tini, ngā namu poto, ngā naonao, ngā rō, ngā peketua, ngā pepe-te-nuinui, ngā pekepeke haratua (he ngārara pekepeke ka puta i te mei Haratua), ētahi manu, ētahi pekapeka, kia poke i a Tāne. Hauwarea atu.

I reira ka tūtaki ki a Whiro me āna tini, a pekepeke-matarūwai, a pekepeke-haurutua, a pekepeke-harakuku, a pekepeke-matanui.

Ngā manu a Rehua

Ko Antares te ingoa Pākehā mō te whetū rā a Rehua. Ka puta a Rehua i te rangi, ko te tohu o te raumati. Waihoki, i tōna putanga, ka puta ko ngā pepeke o te raumati, pērā i te kēkerewai me te tūtaeruru; kīia ai ēnei, ko ngā manu o te raumati.

Ko Tāne rāua ko Tangaroa

Nāwai ā, ka tipu te riri i waenganui i a Tāne me Tangaroa te atua o te moana. Hei uri nō Tangaroa ngā mokomoko me ngā tini ika. Hei utu, ka whakaae a Tāne kia tāraia e te tangata he waka, he matau, he tao, hei aha, hei hopu i ngā tini a Tangaroa.

Insects and canoes

E rua ngā pūrākau mō te ngārara me ngā waka o ngā tūpuna.

Ko Rātā me te tini o Hakuturi

I tana haerenga, ka puta te tini o Hakuturi me tā rātou whakatakariri i ngā mahi pokanoa a Rātā.

Ka whiu a Rātā i tana kupu kanga mō tā rātou whakapōrearea i āna mahi. Ka whakahoki te iwi rā, ‘Rātā ware, nō hea tō mana te tuatua i a Tāne? Kāore i te tika ō mahi.’ Ka pōuri a Rata. Heoi, ka whakaae te tini o Hakuturi mā rātou e tārai he waka mōna.

Ka nui ngā pūrākau a ngā iwi o Te Moananui-a-Kiwa e whakamārama ana ko ēhea ngā whanonga tika o te tangata.

Moths

Te hīhue

Kei tēnā iwi, kei tēnā iwi ngā kōrero me ngā whakapapa ka whakamārama i te takenga o te aitanga pepeke.

Kei a Ngāti Awa e mau ana ngā whakapapa mō te kūmara, tae atu ki ngā whē ka kai i te kūmara. Hei tauira, ko Whānui te matua ā-rangi o te kūmara. Hei teina a Rongomāui māna. Nō tētahi rangi, ka tāhae e Rongomāui he kōpura kūmara, ka mauria iho ki te whenua hei oranga mā te tangata. Nā tana whakatakariri ka tonoa e Whānui a Anuhe rātou ko Toronū, ko Moko ki te whai utu mō taua tāhaetanga. Mai anō i tērā wā kainga ai e ēnei weriweri ngā rau o te kūmara.

Pepetuna

Ko tētahi o ō rāua uri ko Pepetuna (Aenetus virescens), arā, he pirinoa ka kai i te pūriri.

Mosquitoes and sandflies

Hei utu, ka whakaekea te tangata e ngā iwi o Waeroa me Namupoto. Ka kōrero a Waeroa kia tatari mō te pō kōkiri ai te tangata, kei kitea, kei patua tōna rahi i te awatea. Ka whakahoki a Namu, ‘Me pakanga i te awatea.

Hauwarea.
