From 28 August to 3 September 1943 Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin Roosevelt, visited New Zealand. She came to visit the American forces then stationed in the country, to examine the work of the American Red Cross, whose grey uniform she wore throughout the visit, and to examine the contribution of New Zealand women to the war effort. She was impressed by the work of New Zealand women, and at the end of her visit she recorded this message to them offering her thanks for their help in hosting American servicemen.
