Tsunami warning exercise

This 2006 news item describes the timeline for a tsunami warning exercise carried out by the team at the National Crisis Management Centre. The event was held after criticisms of inadequate communication following an earthquake in Tonga in May. Fears that a destructive tsunami would reach New Zealand led many people to flee their homes, unaware that the original warning had been downscaled.
