If a request to release official information under the Official Information Act 1982 is declined, the applicant can ask the Office of the Ombudsmen to review that decision. In 2011 a representative of the Professional Historians' Association of New Zealand/Aotearoa (PHANZA) asked for documents dealing with the restructuring of the Department of Internal Affairs, Archives New Zealand and the National Library. The request was initially refused, and PHANZA complained to the ombudsman. This reply shows that the complaint was successful, and the information was released.
